Frequently asked questions

Who is Kavalink?

Kavalink was initially founded in Fiji Islands in 2017, by a group of Fijian Canadians who had a desire to contribute their knowledge,  skills and also aid with special equipment’s needed to produce high-quality kava and to help farmers distribute their kava globally eliminating the middleman. This also helps in the consumer’s getting fresh kava in its purest form directly from the farm.

After 2 years of research in Fiji, Finding the quality cultivators, testing kava from many areas, and researching the locations of the best variety of kava  plants for potency and taste,  we were confident of our ability to supply the best kava products in their purest form

That’s when we got licensed by Health Canada to distribute Kava in Canada as a NATURAL HEALTH PRODUCT.

Is Kava Legal in Canada?

Kava is considered a controlled item by Health Canada and is classified as a NATURAL HEALTH PRODUCT and not as a Dietary supplement like in the USA and other countries. Kava can be imported In Canada commercial or for personal use.

Importing Commercially

To be able to import Kava Commercially, one has to get approval from Health Canada and have a natural health product number issued and must meet all the processing packaging and labeling requirements.

It is a crime to sell an unlicensed health product in Canada.

Importing for Personal use

One can import a 3 month supply of kava for personal use.

Note:  it doesn’t mention the amount by weight.

Here is an example.

For a kava to have 30% kavalectone (highest percentage of kavalectone concentration in kava  found in Fiji) your daily consumption is limited to 2.5g only.

And if you use it for 90 days it comes to only 225g of supply for 3 months.

What are the Kava forms of preparation?

1...The types of preparation are water 'extracts' (the traditionally prepared micro suspensions in water and 'teas' prepared from powdered kava root),

2…Organic extracts (ethanoic and acetonic) and synthetic. These different products are not chemically equivalent. Products prepared from the organic extracts have been those principally used in Europe and North America in pill or capsule form.

WHY should I use Kavalink’s kava when there are many other choices available?

It is True that there are an abundance of choices available on the market for Kava and if you look closely at the source, they mostly are being distributed from USA with just a few from other countries like New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga, and Vanuatu where the raw materials for their products come from a variety of cultivators and sources without adequate quality control and without sufficient standardization of selection of plant varieties or cultivars or plant parts.

Furthermore

KAVA, like all dietary supplements, is largely unregulated in the United States. Do not assume that this means the drug is safe. The classification simply means that the manufacturer is responsible for ensuring the safety of the supplement, not the FDA. While this relieves the manufacturer of the burden of clinical research, it can sometimes leave the consumer vulnerable to harms, both known and unknown.

What a manufacturer cannot do is market their supplements as a cure for any disease or medical condition. This doesn't mean the manufacturer can't suggest possible health benefits; many do. To better protect yourself, try to not be swayed by health claims that may or may not be true no matter how desperate you are for relief from these suppliers

In Canada, Kava is a controlled item and s regulated by Health Canada as a Natural Health Product making it a very safe and highly regulated kava product

License for a natural health product is approved with a claim for health benefit like used as a calmative to help relieve restlessness and nervousness

Because the quality and safety of kava can vary from one brand to the next, stick with manufacturers that are regulated by a health authority. It also helps to buy brands that can provide a tracing report and the lab test results of the corresponding batch number upon demand.

Look for a product that is directly sent from a source to Canada and is Lab tested and packed in Canada at GMP sites

What do you say when you drink kava?

When receiving the kava and preparing to drink, the guest must clap once, say “Bula” (the Fijian word for hello and love, much like “aloha” in Hawaiian), and then, ideally, drink the cup in its entirety in one gulp, followed by three more claps.

Where do you get your Kava from?

Our Kava is Mainly from Kadavu and Moala Islands.

THE Kadavu Kava is in highest demand in Fiji because of its taste and quality, whereas Moala kava is very rare in the Marketplace. Moala is an isolated island within the Lau groups and the ferry travels are limited to once a month and sometimes longer.

This makes the Moala islands kava a very sought out and in a high demand amongst the Fijians

Because of the lack of transport, middlemen hardly focus on going to Moala for their kava compared to nearby islands and thus the kava plants grow much longer before it is harvested..

Moala kava is slightly on the sweeter side making it a mellow tasting easy to drink kava

Why is Kava Classified as a Natural Health Product in Canada?

Due to risk of hepatotoxicity with kava products, the amount of kavalactones in Piper methysticum must be declared in the Natural Health Product Licence Application Form, or at a minimum in the cover letter. Human clinical data must be provided for safety assessment, unless: 1) the amount of kavalactones does not exceed 125 mg per single dose; 2) the amount of kavalactones does not exceed 250 mg per day; and 3) the product contains an aqueous extract of the whole or peeled rhizome, with a maximum quantity crude equivalent of 3 g/day. Reference: WHO_2007_ASSESS_H_K

Kava is known to produce pleasant sensations and have a calming, relaxing effect on people that use it. Because of its calming qualities, kava has come to the attention of the medical community as a possible treatment for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

Kavalactones are the active ingredients found in Kava plants. There are 18 different kavalactones, with six being more important than the others. These six alone are responsible for over 90% of the active natural ingredients in any given Kava .

  • Demethoxyyangonin = #1
  • Dihydrokavain = #2
  • Yangonin = #3
